Mercedes cannonballs into Avanci’s pool
September 15, 2023
Avanci (the patent licensing company) has pulled off the seemingly impossible by bringing industry leaders and geopolitical counterparts like Qualcomm, Ericsson, Nokia, Huawei and InterDigital under the same umbrella.
This “dream team” came to life after the announcement of Avanci’s 5G patent pool for connected cars. And this alliance is the latest in a series of patent licensing initiatives in the automotive industry.
You may recall another such accord, the “Autotalks Alliance” created by automotive companies like BMW, Ford, and Volkswagen in 2020 to develop a patent pool for 4G and 5G connectivity in vehicles
Here are the key points of the Avanci’s 5G patent pool-
- According to estimates, the pool covers more than 80% patents essential to 5G standards.
- It intends to cover essential patents for 5G connectivity in vehicles, including technologies like radio access, network architecture, and security.
- Avanci claims this patent pool will offer a fair, transparent and efficient way for device makers to access essential patents. And that it will be updated as new 5G technologies emerge.
- Mercedes-Benz is the first licensee of Avanci’s 5G programme, and will pay a flat fee of $21 per vehicle for accessing the 5G SEPs.
