L’Oréal & Estee Lauder’s 2025 PCR Goals

May 8, 2024

Consumers favor sustainable packaging, but visual appeal is still a key purchasing factor in cosmetics products. Companies like Unilever are now creating eco-friendly PCR packaging that also catches the eye.

Many cosmetic companies are adopting Post-Consumer Recycled (PCR) materials in their packaging to reduce environmental impact, landfill waste, and energy use in production.

It also enhances a company’s sustainability profile, attracting eco-conscious consumers.

Two notable innovations in PCR are from Unilever and Albea (a packaging and container manufacturing company)-

  • Unilever’s Eco-Friendly Black Packaging: Unilever has filed a patent for black-colored packaging that’s both stylish and sustainable. This packaging solution uses over 95% recycled high-density polyethylene (HDPE) in a multilayer design, ensuring the product meets customer expectations while being environmentally responsible.
  • Albea’s multi-chamber tube stores multiple liquids in one container: Albea Services submitted a patent for a multi-layer tube that incorporates PCR resin. This design is tailored for the cosmetic products, allowing for multiple liquid or pasty compositions in one eco-friendly container.

And that’s not all. L’Oreal aims to use 50% PCR plastic in its packaging by 2025, while Estee Lauder plans for at least 25%.

A pioneer in PCR packaging, Aveda now ensures about 90% of its HDPE plastic bottles contain at least 80% PCR content.

The trend toward PCR packaging is evident from increased market activities and a spike in patent filings, particularly within the beauty industry.
