From Booze to Re-use

March 12, 2024

Even fully recyclable packaging can face challenges in meeting the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) policy of Europe, due to recycling contamination.

Typically, paper packaging may contain a plastic liner for liquids. Separating these materials can be a real headache, which leads to recycling contamination.

This means that a whole batch of recyclables might be discarded due to the presence of non-recyclable materials.

To solve this Frugalpac (UK) has designed a paper bottle where the materials are built to be easily separated. (GB2609029A).

The container has a separate paperboard outer shell and a non-stuck inner liner holding the liquid.

Currently, Frugalpac is working with multiple alcoholic beverage companies to create paper bottles for their products.

Frugalpac isn’t the only one. More companies are making similar innovations, which indicates that this is a broad trend in the packaging industry.

For example, Tetra Pak introduced the Tetra Evero design, which also focuses on easy part separation for recycling.

Similarly, Jabil Packaging Solutions has developed the Eco.bottle®, featuring a patented tear strip that aids in the efficient separation of paper and plastic components.

There are more companies that are making user and environment friendly packaging. Find them and their research here – https://www.greyb.com/blog/sustainable-packaging-companies/

For instance, one company has developed packaging for pick-and-pack hand-assembly lines, targeting customers who want eco-packaging without adhesive joints.
