Fetal Bovine Serum (FBS) ….doesn’t really “meat” the criteria of “cruelty-free” meat. That’s why we have done some research to find what are some ethical alternatives to FBS.

One startup, Biftek, has come up with a patent-pending formulation which uses Post-biotics as an alternative to FBS. It’s also interesting to see people are actively protecting their methods via patents.

Another startup, Future Fields, has come up with a patent pending solution which uses genetically modified embryos of common fruit flies to produce FGF2 growth factor. 

It’s cheaper (on a mass-market scale,) more sustainable, and gives pesky flies a purpose other than ruining picnics.
