Nikola’s progress in the EV Market

Nikola had received a $1.7 million grant from the US Department of Energy on August 7, 2019, to continue the research on fuel cell membrane electrode assembly (MEA). With long-lasting hydrogen technology for commercial transportation, Nikola Motors has made strides toward a zero-emission future. Nikola has been developing a hydrogen fuel cell truck. The company is also collaborating with several partners to build the infrastructure needed to make hydrogen affordable and accessible.

Hydrogen is a clean energy source that is abundant and efficient, with approximately three times the energy density of diesel. It emits zero carbon when used to power a fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV), with water as the only byproduct. Nikola believes that this strategy overcomes the chicken-and-egg problem that has hampered the commercial trucking industry’s shift to zero-emission hydrogen.

This award provides an opportunity for the highly talented Nikola team to leverage expertise in academia and exceptional resources within the DOE Fuel Cell Consortium for Performance and Durability to accelerate a breakthrough that would benefit the entire hydrogen and fuel cell industry and community.”

-Jesse Schneider, executive vice president, Hydrogen & Fuel Cell Technologies, Nikola. (Source)(Source)

In order to address hydrogen fuel demand for their FCEV electric vehicles and other clients, Nikola Energy Business Unit has been creating and constructing a network of hydrogen fueling stations, including potential charging solutions for BEV electric truck customers, according to a press release dated September 30, 2020. If Nikola’s idea succeeds, it would address some of the most serious disadvantages of hydrogen fuel cells, such as limited fuel availability and a lack of national infrastructure. Nikola’s hydrogen fuel station concept could pave the way for hydrogen infrastructure in the United States.  (Source)(Source)

“This is the biggest advancement we have seen in the battery world; we are not talking about small improvements; or about doubling your cell phone battery capacity. We are talking about doubling the range of BEVs and hydrogen-electric vehicles around the world.”

Lucid Motors stated that the Lucid Air would be the quickest charging electric car ever produced. This new charging speed record has been made possible by an ultra-high 900V electrical architecture, custom lithium-ion battery cells, a very complex battery and thermal operating system, and the Lucid Air’s incomparable engine efficacy. This efficiency has a direct and incalculable impact on Lucid Air’s charge rate. Determining the rate of mileage as distinct from the rate of energy flow. (Source)

Lucid Wunderbox- Battery Charger of Lucid Air

The built-in ‘Wunderbox’ on the Lucid Air is an incredible beast of a battery charger. The Lucid Air would be the quickest charging electric vehicle ever produced, with charging rates of up to 20 miles per minute. Owners charging their Lucid Air in real-world conditions on the road can achieve 300 miles of range in just 20 minutes. Aside from speed, it is compatible with almost any public charging station and has bi-directional capabilities. (Source)

Lucid’s batteries were designed to be used in a variety of electric vehicle and energy storage products, including second-life applications. The lithium-ion battery that powers electric cars and trucks has a hard life. Irregular charging and discharging rates, high temperatures, and a high number of partial charge cycles cause these batteries to degrade in the first five to eight years of use. They eventually end up in a recycling facility.

Instead of recycling batteries for raw material recovery and losing unrealized value, automakers are exploring ways to reuse batteries as part of a small but growing market. Before sending the battery to a recycler, automakers may be able to generate additional revenue by reusing it or selling it to a third party. OEMs such as Lucid Motors are incorporating reuse principles into the design of their batteries. (Source)

Arrival’s progress in the EV Market

Arrival’s revolutionary sustainable designing approach has focused on recyclability over the vehicle life cycle. Polypropylene plastic body panels have been one of the company’s many revolutionary techniques. These panels are less time-consuming and easier to mold than metal panels, and they are also created in their final color. This means that the paint shop could be removed from the production line, saving space and time during vehicle assembly.

According to a report, Arrival has claimed its vertical integration as a competitive edge. Many competitors employed branded core components according to Arrival to save money on R&D, but Arrival has claimed that this could result in components costing the OEM more over the life of the supply agreement. Arrival’s strategy involves designing most of the fundamental components in-house, and the business anticipates 60% of its forthcoming electric van’s components to be vertically integrated. Arrival’s unique composite materials are low-cost, lightweight, and strong.  As a result, any vehicle maintenance that is required is easier and more cost-effective. (Source)(Source)

As of May 16, 2020, Arrival launched its first micro-factory in the UK. It has distinguished itself from its competition by opting for a Microfactory strategy. Arrival vehicles have been manufactured in Microfactories with small footprints and affordable costs. Instead of the usual automotive production line, micro-factories use a revolutionary cell-based assembly process.

They can be swiftly deployed by utilizing existing commercial space and creating any sort of vehicle to fulfill demand. These facilities are smaller, less expensive, and faster to put up than a full-scale factory, and they could be constructed near their end consumers. This technique, according to Arrival, has allowed the company to be more flexible than its competitors, and better equipped to alter in response to customer needs. (Source)(Source)(Source)

With Arrival’s products, our clients are not forced to compromise between being green and being cost-efficient. Our focus on the whole EV ecosystem, new methods of design and production, and our enabling technologies are the key to driving down the cost of EVs and accelerating the transition to zero-emission transportation globally,”
