Battery that could make Li-ion feel “salty”

June 22, 2024

While the research on sodium-ion batteries has been around since the disco era (or the 1970) EV companies are seeing the potential in it now.

I realized this after seeing companies investing in this tech. I wanted to share some of these new developments with you which hint at Sodium-ion becoming the next “go to” battery-

  1. The Chinese battery maker CATL unveiled a new sodium-ion battery, Qilin, in 2022. It has achieved a volume utilization efficiency of 72% and an energy density of up to 255 Wh/kg, the highest integration level achieved globally.

The battery can easily go over 1,000 km which, I don’t need to tell you, is a game changer.

  1. Last month Chery announced that it will be using CALT Qilin batteries in its vehicles which shows the Quilin battery’s readiness of use.
  2. JAC, another Chinese automaker, has been working on a sodium-ion battery for its Sehol E10x model to increase the vehicle’s range and lifespan while reducing costs.
  3. Faradion (UK) has amassed the most patents in sodium-ion batteries, solidifying its position as a market leader in non-aqueous sodium-ion batteries.

And the list is longer but I didn’t wanna fill up your screen with all these sustainable advancements 🙂
