CAEStorage That Takes the Cake
One startup has cracked the code to cost-effective compressed air energy storage (CAES), offering a solution that’s 30% cheaper than traditional methods: Cheesecake Energy’s eTanker.
Founded in the UK, Cheesecake Energy’s e-tanker combines compressed air and thermal energy storage.
What makes Cheesecake Energy’s eTanker the crème de la crème?
Unlike conventional CAES, which depends on geological formations like salt caverns for storing compressed air, Cheesecake Energy uses modular containers for air storage. This means one can set up the system at the location of their choosing, eliminating the need for specific geological features
Plus, it provides full power for up to 20 hours over a 25-year lifespan, outlasting lithium-ion batteries that typically retire after 5-10 years, and that too at a significantly lower cost.
So you can have your cheesecake and eat it too 🙂
Helmed by Michael Simpson, a University of Cambridge graduate, Cheesecake Energy has secured impressive backing, including a £9.4M grant from the Department for Energy Security & Net Zero in 2023.
The startup has been selected for Amazon’s Sustainability Accelerator program, which supports and accelerates sustainability-focused startups. They also stand the chance to earn up to £2 million Amazon adopts their technology
Traditional energy storage methods, such as lithium-ion batteries and pumped hydro, have addressed renewable energy intermittency but face environmental, scalability, and cost challenges.
That’s where we need innovative solutions like compressed air energy storage (CAES.) It offers lower environmental impact, scalability, and cost savings.
