Unlike conventional CAES, which depends on geological formations like salt caverns for storing compressed air, Cheesecake Energy uses modular containers for air storage. This means one can set up the system at the location of their choosing, eliminating the need for specific geological features 

Plus, it provides full power for up to 20 hours over a 25-year lifespan, outlasting lithium-ion batteries that typically retire after 5-10 years, and that too at a significantly lower cost.

Helmed by Michael Simpson, a University of Cambridge graduate, Cheesecake Energy has secured impressive backing, including a £9.4M grant from the Department for Energy Security & Net Zero in 2023. 

The startup has been selected for Amazon’s Sustainability Accelerator program, which supports and accelerates sustainability-focused startups. They also stand the chance to earn up to £2 million Amazon adopts their technology
