Solutions to burping bovines
Climate-conscious customers are cutting back on cappuccinos and abandoning cheese boards because of the GHG emissions from dairy. These emissions with agriculture, contribute about 11% of all global emissions.
So to combat that, both dairy and animal feed companies are actively innovating to tackle this situation.
For instance, DSM Firmenich claims that their patented feed additive (US11191288B2) called Bovaer effectively reduces methane emissions by 30% in dairy cows and 45% in beef cattle.
And several dairy companies, such as Arla, Friesland, Valio, Fonterra, and Lactalis, have already tested their solution.
Also, the Government of New Zealand has collaborated with the Pastoral Greenhouse Gas Research Consortium to develop a long-term solution: a vaccine to decrease methane emissions from ruminant livestock.
And Arla, in 2023, joined forces with Lyras, a UV pasteurization company, to implement UV technology for pasteurizing dairy products and juices. Their technology has the potential to achieve a significant reduction of 60-90% in energy consumption and a 60-80% reduction in water usage.
Even industry giants like Danone are partnering with multiple startups to reduce their farm emissions.
